What is tortellini?
Tortellini is a type of stuffed pasta that is ring or croissant-shaped. You can find tortellini that is stuffed with meat, cheese, spinach and other ingredients.
A lot of people ask “Are tortellini and ravioli the same thing?” The answer is no, although they are very similar. Ravioli is shaped more like a pillow and tortellini is curved like a croissant. Traditionally, they originated from different areas and were stuffed with different ingredients but you can find nearly identical ravioli and tortellini in today’s markets.
When I use tortellini, I prefer to use Kirkland Signature Five-Cheese Tortellini with Parmigiano Reggiano from Costco. This tortellini has no preservatives and is ready in just two minutes. Since I’m usually feeding a crowd, I love that it’s a bulk buy and saves our family money. You can order it easily from Costco with Instacart, even if you don’t have a Costco membership!
What is gouda fondue?
A fondue is a dish where small pieces of food are dipped into a hot sauce like oil, broth or cheese. Chocolate fondues are also popular.
A gouda fondue is a hot cheese sauce that is prepared in a fondue pot. The sauce that I use with my tortellini is luxurious, rich and creamy because I basically just create a gouda fondue.
You could use this recipe to create a fondue instead of the tortellini dish. Instead of pouring the cheese sauce over the cooked tortellini, just dip items like bread, cooked meats or vegetables into the cheese sauce itself.
For this cheese sauce, I love to use the Dutch Tradition Imported Gouda from Costco. This cheese melts exceptionally well and has a delicious, robust flavor that makes this fondue cheese sauce unbelievably delicious.
What should you serve with this dish?
Our luxurious tortellini with gouda fondue is best served with garlic bread, sautéed vegetables and tossed green salads. I love to serve it with garlic marinated mushrooms, meatballs, or homemade bread.
It’s a meal that feels fancy, so I also like to pair it with sparkling cider.
How do you make tortellini with gouda fondue?
That’s a great question! Rather than bore you with endless information, let’s get right to the recipe.
What if I don’t have a fondue pot?
If you don’t have a fondue pot, don’t worry! Just use a heavy-bottomed pan on a low heat temperature. A double-boiler is another excellent substitute for a fondue pot.
